Five Must-See Musicals In London!

Author DanielDaniel, January 17th, 2024

Find out the best shows currently playing in London

With the new year in full swing and the weather only getting colder, many Londoners may feel restless while being stuck indoors (not to mention the heating costs). However, the good news is that Theatreland is offering you five fantastic musicals that are currently being performed in London, ranging from brand-new adaptations to 40-year-old classics.

Operation Mincemeat - Book Here

Considered one of the most impossible stories of its time; be transported back in time to WWII and experience a more than daring plan. Combining the styles of Noel Coward and Noel Fielding while also drawing inspiration from Hamilton and One Man Two Guv'nors, Operation Mincemeat is a tale of deception so unbelievable that it's hard to imagine how it ended up helping us win the war. The real question is, how did a corpse in formal attire manage to outmaneuver Hitler?

Cruel Intentions - Book Here

Based on the classic French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and the hit 1999 film, this new musical is a '90s throwback, including the nostalgic hits from the original soundtrack like "Love Fool," "Just A Girl," and, of course, "Bittersweet Symphony." It's an intoxicating musical that's intentionally cruel.

Hamilton - Book Here

Tony, Grammy, and Emmy winner, Lin-Manuel Miranda, created this razor-sharp musical. It is a mix of classic theatre, spoken word, fresh hip-hop, and whip-smart writing. The musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, an incredible visionary who lived during tumultuous times. The musical was recognized for its landmark status and won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score.

Les Miserables - Book Here

Seen by an audience of over 70 million people, it's safe to say that Les Miserables is the world's most popular musical. In the nearly 40 years since its premiere, Claude Schonberg and Alain Boublil's musical adaptation of Victor Hugo's doorstop of a novel has become the benchmark of musical theatre. An epic score, passionate story, and phenomenal scale are part of the magic, but it's truly the wonder of seeing a live performance that does it the most justice.

Dear Evan Hansen - Book Here

With a Hollywood movie adaption solidifying this show as a modern classic, this Broadway smash hit musical is finally taking to the road in this brand new production from Ambassador Theatre Group and the Nottingham Playhouse. The show dives into the themes of misunderstood youth and the ever-growing impact of technology on our lives, told via the story of Evan, a troubled teen. The original version of this Tony-winning musical was a massive hit in the West End, earning a staggering seven Olivier nominations including Best New Musical!

None of these taking your fancy? Not to fret, there are plenty of other musicals in London that are worthy of your attention, you can find all the shows and tickets here.
